# Metal or ceramic, separate tie or built\-in door

Metal and ceramic describe bracket material categories\. Self\-ligating describes a built\-in wire\-retaining mechanism\. The AAO describes self\-ligating brackets that can be metal or ceramic, so material and mechanism should be read as two separate attributes\.

### The two attributes can be combined

A material description identifies what the bracket is described as being made from\. A wire\-retention description explains how the archwire is held at that bracket\. Neither attribute is a replacement for the other\.

Ceramic brackets are clear or tooth\-colored fixed attachments connected by a wire\. That is different from a removable clear tray\. Within fixed braces, a ceramic material description can coexist with a built\-in wire\-retaining door, just as a metal description can\.

The matrix below is a category map\. It shows why a list headed metal, ceramic and self\-ligating mixes different kinds of labels\. It is not a product menu or a record of which combinations the clinic currently supplies\.

Two axes in a fixed\-braces description

| Bracket material category | Separate wire\-retaining component | Built\-in wire retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Metal | Material and separate\-tie mechanism are distinct fields | AAO describes metal self\-ligating brackets |
| Ceramic | Material and separate\-tie mechanism are distinct fields | AAO describes ceramic self\-ligating brackets |

Material categories and mechanisms are mapped without a product\-availability claim\.

### The bracket's appearance is only one part of what is visible

Clear or tooth\-colored refers to the ceramic bracket category\. The archwire and any retaining components are still separate parts of the assembly\. The AAO ceramic explanation describes possible wire and elastic components in addition to the bracket\.

A phrase such as ceramic self\-ligating brackets therefore supplies a material category and a retention mechanism\. It does not by itself describe the appearance of every wire or additional component\. Nor does clear in this context mean that the main appliance is removable\.

No invisibility, exact composition, wire coating or stain\-resistance claim is made\.

### A fictional description fills some fields and leaves others open

Consider a fictional description: 'ceramic brackets with an integrated wire\-retaining door\.' Ceramic fills the bracket\-material category\. Integrated door fills the wire\-retention field\. Both statements can be true together\.

The sentence leaves the product identity, wire details and individual plan unstated\. Those omissions do not make the two stated attributes meaningless; they show exactly how much the description tells you\. A statement about faster treatment would be a further claim with a different evidence requirement\.

Fictional description: identify the attribute supplied

| Field | Information in the sentence |
| --- | --- |
| Bracket material category | Ceramic |
| Wire retention | Integrated door |
| Exact system and wire details | Not stated |
| Individual goal or comparative result | Not stated |

The specification is fictional and is not a SMILE\-FX appliance recommendation\.
